MEXICO CITY, Mexico: The fast-spreading swine flu virus is rocking Mexico like a powerful earthquake, deeply shaking the lives of its people and the country’s institutions. The AMIC Dental trade expo and the scientific congress of the National University of Mexico (UNAM), which were to take place April 29 to May 3rd at the World Trade Center here, have been postponed as a result, as well as the upcoming Regional Meeting of the Mexican Dental Association (ADM) in Leon, Guanajuato.
At a meeting at the totally empty Hotel del Parque, across the World Trade Center, AMIC Dental president Ayub Safar said to Dental Tribune Latin America that the board decided to postpone the expo, at the request of Mexico’s Health Department.
“We are now trying to have the expo in the first week of June, after we reach agreements with the World Trade Center, UNAM, and get the green light of Mexico’s Health Department,” said Safar.
Changing dates of the expo represents an enormous burden to organizers, exhibitors, dentists, speakers and students. Over twelve thousand dentists were expected at the AMIC Dental expo, as well as over six thousand dental students before the end of their semester, at UNAM’s congress, which in June will have less available space for scientific conferences.
“We hope this health emergency will be over soon,” said AMIC’s president. “We will reprint and mail again to the 65,000 dentists in the country information and new dates of the expo as soon as it’s available.” In addition, Safar said AMIC has already sent emails to its 45,000-dentist database. Many showed up at the closed doors of the World Trade Center yesterday despite the efforts by AMIC.
AMIC Dental has two annual trade expos in Mexico City, one in April-May and another in October-November. The latter is a large international event where products are introduced that attracts around 25,000 people, with alternating scientific congress by the Mexican Dental Association and the Mexico City Dental Association (ADDF).
The aim of the April-May trade fair in turn is to provide Mexican dentists with a chance to resupply on dental products and equipment. Dental Tribune Latin America distributes papers at both expos.
The Safar family, probably the most powerful dental industry group in Mexico, has five different companies, among them Equipos Dentales Villa de Cortés, the largest dental deposit in Mexico, and Laboratorios Gayz, one of the largest importers of dental equipment.
While the swine flu epidemic is a great blow to the economy of this country, organizers of AMIC Dental have proven resilient to economic downturns and currency fluctuations for over 25 years. Ayub Safar is confident that, given the need and loyalty to the event of Mexico’s dentists, the 51st expo in June will also be a success.
