São Paulo, Brazil The president of the powerful Brazilian Dental Association (ABO) described the partnership agreement with Dental Tribune International Group (DTI) to provide internet-based continuing education courses as "a revolution" for dental professionals in Brazil.

ABO is the largest dental association in Brazil and has offices and advanced training schools in all the states of this country, where there are over 200,000 practicing dentists. Brazil accounts for 20% of all practicing dentists in the world. A telling sign of the interest in this huge market is that companies such as Sirona and Ultradent have opened manufacturing plants this year in Brazil.

DTI, which publishes over 100 dental publications around the world, also signed important cooperation agreements in Latin America with some of the most important expos and dental associations in the region in Spanish-speaking countries such as Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, as well as in Spain.

Online education
DTI president Torsten Oemus, said the partnership with ABO will provide dental professionals in Brazil with the advanced Dental Tribune Study Club (DTSC) educational platform (www.dtstudyclub.com) in Portuguese. Oemus added that it is a historic agreement that will allow both organizations to extend their reach by offering high-quality training courses online.

The DTSC platform is a global online e-learning platform and community that provides certified continuing education credits of the American Dental Association (ADA CERP). It allows registered participants to access live, as well as recorded online lectures, which can be viewed at the dentists’ convenience 24/7.

The DTSC brings local events to global audiences through live, interactive and archived webinars. A growing database of peer-reviewed case studies and papers is available on the webpage, as well as focused discussion forums and regular product reviews to keep practitioners up-todate.

ABO president Dr. Newton Carvalho said that long-distance education is a necessity, especially in countries as large as Brazil.

"That's the reason the Brazilian government is promoting long-distance education courses," said Carvalho. "ABO, which offers numerous lectures and courses, will now use the DTSC recognized educational platform to help Brazilian dentists. It's a real revolution in education."

The online courses will begin in Brazilian cities where there's already a demand, after which they will expand to other areas, Carvalho said. All the ABO network in Brazil, known as REDE ABO, will offer customize courses according to the needs in each region.

REDE ABO has a total of 320 units: 27 sections and 293 regional associations which make it "the largest educational network in the world," according to what former FDI World Dental Federation President H.R. Yoon said during his visit to Brazil in 2004.

Carvalho said the ABO-DTI partnership will help both dentists and patients, which will have highly trained professionals as a result.

"That's the real revolution ABO wants to achieve: that a professional who practices in the Amazon region is as qualified as one who practices in São Paulo or Belo Horizonte," he added, referring to cities where there is a large offer of training courses.

DTI in Rio de Janeiro
DTI also signed an agreement with ABO-Rio de Janeiro (ABO-RJ) to publish Today issues of its daily expo paper at the International Rio de Janeiro Dental Congress (CIORJ), considered the largest scientific meeting in Brazil.

The publishing group will also provide at CIORJ its live lecture series Dental Tribune Study Club Symposia, which after the event become part of the archived DTSC courses offered online.

The CIORJ congress, which celebrates in July 2011 its 20th anniversary, will provide for the first time this year courses in Spanish sponsored by the Latin American Dental Federation (FOLA) and Dental Tribune.

This simultaneous Spanish-language congress in Rio is called the Latin American Dental Meeting (LADM), and is part of a strategy to attract Spanish-speaking attendees to one of the most beautiful cities in Latin America.

Paulo Murilo Jr, from ABO-RJ, said the partnership with DTI will bring to Rio the most renowned speakers in the region, leaders of Latin American dental associations, and will help to enhance the international recognition of the meeting.

Dental Tribune has similar agreements with the largest expos in the region, such as AMIC Dental in Mexico, Salón Dental Chile or Expodent Cordoba in Argentina. In these and other expos it publishes Today, its daily expo paper. In addition, Dental Tribune Latin America is the official publication of FOLA.
