SALAVADOR DA BAHIA, Brazil: For years the Young Dentists Worldwide (YDW) meeting and forum have been regularly taking place at the FDI Annual World Dental Congress. At this year’s forum in Salvador da Bahia, international acknowledged lecturers will discuss the topic “General dentistry vs. specialisation - Helping young dentists finding their way”.

YDW was established in 1991 in Portugal at the annual Congress of the International Association of Dental Students (IADS) by 15 just graduated dentists. The idea behind the new organization was to fill the gap between the World Dental Federation (FDI) and IADS.

The main aim of YDW is to promote the needs and interests of young dentists all over the world including supporting young dental scientists through scientific programmes especially designed for the interests of the young dentists as well as exchange programmes with scientific and cultural activities. YDW also offers voluntary work programmes to establish voluntary networks for dentists. Another priority of the organisation is the development of a standardised dental education including postgraduate education and specialization.

YDW is eager to cooperate worldwide. Today, members include the International Association for Disability and Oral Health, Young Dentists Germany and IADS. It is also possible to become an individual member of YDW.

YDW meets at Mid Year Meetings (MYM) with assistance of regional dental associations and at the annual Congress that is held together with the IADS. In 2011, the MYM will be held at the International Dental Show in Cologne. The congress in August will be hosted by India, which has the IADS membership, and be another great opportunity to bring the communities of students and young dentists together, the organization says. The event is going to be exceptional as the IADS will celebrate their 60th anniversary together with the 20th anniversary of the YDW.
