NEW YORK — The Dental Tribune International Media Lounge was the venue where Dental Tribune International conferred the first Dental Tribune Global Awards 2011 here at the Greater New York Dental Meeting.

DTI President Torsten Oemus introduced the first eight winners of these 2011 awards, which recognize from outstanding individuals in dentistry to innovations in dentistry.

Mr. Oemus highlighted the careers of Dr. Adolfo Rodríguez, president of the Latin American Dental Federation, who was awarded as “Outstanding Individual of the Year”; Samuel Prophete, president of the Haitian Dental Association, received the “Dentistry in a Crisis Zone” award; Alan Miller, founder of AMD Lasers, was awarded for “Innovation in Dentistry”; and Wolfgang Van Hall, managing director of Shofu Europe, received the DTI award in the category of “Lifetime Achievement.”

Dr. Rodríguez thanked the help DTI gave him in Latin America, where we developed dental health campaigns and was instrumental in developing professional associations. Dr. Prophete, who could not be present in New York, thanked in a letter Dental Tribune as well as many organizations who helped Haiti in a time of need, such as the devastating 2011 earthquake.

But perhaps the most moving words belong to Alan Miller, who said that Dental Tribune helped a small Midwestern dental laser manufacturing company become a recognized world player in dentistry, through not only advertising but especially the Dental Tribune Study Courses that allowed AMD to show their products worldwide.
