Orlando, Fla .— Dr. Raymond F. Gist of Grand Blanc, Mich., took office Oct. 13 as the ADA's 147th president during the 2010 House of Delegates meeting here at annual session. Dr. Gist, the first African-American to hold the ADA’s highest elective office, succeeds Dr. Ron Tankersley as president.

“We have a respected voice and unique strengths that are the envy of other health care fields,” the new president told the delegates. “Policy makers trust that when the ADA speaks, we speak for organized dentistry.”

Before the delegates made him president-elect in 2009, Dr. Gist represented the ADA’s 9th District as a member of the Board of Trustees. He is a past president of the Michigan Dental Association and has served as chair of the ADA Board’s Diversity Committee, a delegate to the FDI World Dental Congress and trustee liaison to the ADA Political Action Committee’s Board of Directors.

In balloting Oct. 12, the 2010 House elected Dr. William R. Calnon of Rochester, N.Y., ADA president-elect. Dr. Calnon will succeed Dr. Gist as ADA president when the House convenes in Las Vegas for the 2011 annual session.

Dr. Calnon has served as 2nd District trustee since 2006 and is a past member of the ADA Council on Dental Practice. He also is a past president of the New York State Dental Association, the 7th (NY) District Dental Society and the Monroe County Dental Society. Dr. Calnon is a general dentist who received his dental degree in 1978 from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Elected Oct. 12 to the post of ADA second vice president was Dr. Patricia L. Blanton of Dallas. After she serves as second vice president for 2010-11, Dr. Blanton automatically becomes first vice president the following year.
