PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO. A group of top speakers and dignitaries, including the visibly moved Ambassador of Haiti to Mexico, and over 5,000 attendees gathered here for the benefit congress "A Smile for Haiti," the first of a series of events to help Haitian dentists after the earthquake.

The event, organized by the Ibero-Latin American Dental Federation (FDILA), was spectacular, extremely well organized and a great show of camaradery among colleagues. All the speakers donated their time and fees, and Dental Tribune Latin America broadcast live online the event throughout Latin America in support of this cause.

The first rate three-day event included not only lectures by some of the most distinguished speakers in Latin America, but FDILA also organized a classy reception at the impressive and beautiful beach NH Krystal resort. Tall columns framed the Bay of Banderas over the Pacific Ocean and embraced guests and lecturers alike.

An elegant gala dinner, and a beauty contest of dental students brought all together for spirited competition and fun, and FDILA even commissioned a song entitled "Una sonrisa por Haití" (A Smile for Haiti) from songwriter Paulino Monroy of Guadalajara.

It was a who's who of dental academics from different fields. Dr. Daniel Barrera Pérez, director of relations with former alumnae of Mexico's largest university UNAM, opened the event by saying that it was a remarkable academic effort for the benefit of Haiti, and afterward signed a cooperation agreement with FDILA.

The Ambassador of Haiti to Mexico, Robert Manuel, unabashedly emotional as he listened to the song for Haiti at the gala dinner, thanked congress organizers and said the response of Mexicans had been of overwhelming generosity.

"In three months," the Ambassador said, "Mexicans have donated over $17,000 million pesos (around US $1.4 million), from thousands of pesos donations to many of just 1 cent, or have simply showed up at the embassy to show their support."

"These gestures of friendship and generosity with Haiti, not only touch your heart but make you proud of Latin America," he added. He asked for support for Haitian dentists in the form of academic exchanges, and said dentists have the most beautiful gift to give -- a smile, and that he was proud of the efforts of FDILA to bring back the smiles of the Haitian people.

Top Quality Lectures
FDILA's president Dr. Adán Yáñez Larios introduced the president of the Haiti Dental Association, Dr. Samuel Prophete, and the lecturers, which included well-known figures such as Enrique Jadad, Iván Herrera, Gonzalo Arana, Sergio Kohen, Miguel Asenjo, Renato Miotto, Carlos Jiménez, Arturo Alvarado, Isabel Aranda and Jesús Iñiguez.

Dental Tribune Latin America broadcast most of these lectures through its Dental Tribune Study Club (DTSC), making it possible to view them from all over the world. The lectures are now available at www.dtstudyclubspanish.com to a growing audience of dentists. All proceeds of the online "A Smile for Haiti" educational lectures will be donated to the Haiti Dental Association.

The Spanish-language DTSC is an online-based educational resource with ADA-CERP credits that is gaining wide acceptance for its faculty and the great potential of e-learning courses and postgraduate studies, which can be accessed 24/7 from the home or office.

In Puerto Vallarta, lecture halls were full the three days of the event, mostly by Mexican dentists and students, but the "A Smile for Haiti" congress also brought here several dozens of attendees from Venezuela, Colombia and Costa Rica, among other countries. Several of them had wanted to volunteer in Haiti, and decided to help through this congress.

Lecturers such as Jadad, Jiménez and Miotto completely engaged their audiences, to the point that their conferences lasted beyond the designated time-frame. Jadad explained the importance of Recaldent, an ingredient derived from casein, to strengthen teeth, Jiménez show an extraordinary series of implant cases, and Miotto a compelling overview of modern endodontics.
