LIMA, Peru — The Dean of the of Peru Dental College (COP), Dr. Miguel Angel Saravia Rojas, said that in the presidential message of July 28 president-elect Ollanta Humala Tasso must give priority oral health in the country, because a large part of Peruvians suffer from oral health problems and lack of education in this field.

"Never in a Message to the Nation has the oral health of the country being a focus, so this situation continues to cause significant loss of teeth", said the specialist, who noted that 95% of Peruvians suffer from tooth decay and 60% had missing teeth.

The Dean suggested greater involvement of dental professionals in remote areas of the country and the overall distribution of generic fluoridated toothpastes, toothbrushes and dental floss to be part of a mission of the Ministry of Health, as it is done with vaccines.

"This will reduce the risk of dental caries and the disease rates to 50% in five years," said Saravia Rojas.
He also stressed that this is a problem that has been dragging for several governments, but none has given its due importance.

Finally, the dean of the COP invoked a dialogue with the elected government to discuss oral health strategies in order to reduce this scourge.
