Peruvian President Backs Effort by COP to provide oral health care

LIMA - Dr. Miguel Angel Saravia Rojas, Dean of the Dental College of Peru, urged the country’s president, Ollanta Humala Tasso and Health Minister Dr. Alberto Tejada Noriega, to join efforts to combat oral disease in the far regions of the country where there’s a lack of dentists.

The President and Health Minister agreed that population located in remore ares of Peru need to get access to dental health.

President Humala participated in the Commitment to Health Day, held by the Ministry of Health in the city of Pisco, where dental was provided by the Alert Brigade Peru of the Dental College of Peru.

Dr. Saravia Rojas proposed campaigns to combat prevalent diseases such as caries, which if not treated in time result in the loss of teeth in the population.

He also raised the need to incorporate to the Ministry of Health, generic fluoride toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwashes and dental floss, to provide access to preventive products for low-income people in the country, which are to up to 90% cheaper than those sold commercially.

Large-scale dental care
On Commitment to Health Day in Pisco, a tent was set up with 20 members of volunteers from Alert Peru, who performed dental examinations to an average of 1,300 children between 5 and 14 years at the schools Alto de Molino (Pisco Pueblo) and the Cooperative Almirante Grau (Pisco Playa).

Talks on oral hygiene habits such as proper brushing, the importance of brushing teeth and its impact on overall health were discussed, as well as healthy eating tips, zero cavities lunchboxes and the use of fluoridated salt.

Residents received as incentive to develop the habit of brushing their teeth: dental kits with toothbrushes and toothpaste donated by Colgate, and educational brochures.

Thanks to a dental mobile unit from the Faculty of Dentistry of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, where Dr. Saravia Rojas is a professor, treatments were performed using the technique called Atraumatic Restoration Practice (ART).
