SANTIAGO — Biofotonica Chile launched here in September 2010 one of the most useful and original devices to ever come to the market: Milestone Scientifics’ award-winning STA Single Tooth Anesthesia System® unit, which does not use needles or syringes.

Biofotonica Manager Angel Bayo said at the recent Salon Dental Chile 2011 that the STA system is a revolutionary treatment with two main advantages.

On one hand he said, "Discomfort to the patient is zero" since the STA Single Tooth Anesthesia System® uses a pressure sensor to manage the flow of the anesthetic without having to use the tools most hated by patients: the needle and syringe.

On the other hand, the system "is a stress-free way of applying anesthesia for the dentist". Bayo rightly states that one of the things that have not changed at all in 150 years of advances in dentistry is the use of needles.

"The additional benefit for the patient is that the STA does not numb the tongue or cheek," he added.

Bayo explained that a small tube "is placed in the groove of a tooth and when a slight pressure is applied" it releases initially a drop of topical anesthesia every two seconds, so the patient experiences neither pain nor sensitivity."

The anesthesia then flows from the point of initial contact around the tooth until it reaches the apex. "When it comes to multiple roots, we apply it both distal and mesial," said the manager, who adds that procedure takes no more than 2 or 3 minutes. The procedure is completely painless and the dentists can begin working immediately.

Dale Johnson, president of the American company Milestone Scientific, said at the Salon Dental Chile show that many studies confirm the efficacy of the STA Single Tooth Anesthesia System® since it was launched in the US in 2008. Many of these studies are available at Milestone Scientifics’ internet page.

"The technology has been out for about 13 years, "said Johnson, "but it wasn't until three years ago that we developed this new pressure sensor that administers anesthesia in a controlled manner." The STA system is now in over 45 countries.

The Biofotonica manager adds that the STA system avoids patient stress, which is very important especially in children. "Children feel traumatized when the first thing they get at the dental office is an injection, and then as adults do not go to the dentist until they feel real pain," says Bayo.

Bayo is convinced that the STA system not only avoids this trauma but fosters "patient loyalty for life."

The manager added that the University of Valparaiso is conducting comparative studies analyzing "the anxiety caused in patients by injecting anesthesia with traditional syringes and the effects of the STA system, which does not cause anxiety at all."
