A Grand New Educational Hall

The standing room only Live Dentistry Arena, where surgical procedures are performed on a daily basis and projected in real time into big screens, was undoubtedly on of the main draws of this 87th New York show, where Dr. Frank Milnar and Dr. Michael Miyasaki lectured to large crowds.

The Dental Tribune Study Club Symposia offered on Sunday six C.E. credits lectures from a lineup of well-known speakers, including Dr. Howard Glazer, Dr. Shamsun Kherani, Dr. Ron Kaminer, Dr. Louis Malcmacher, Dr. Brian Novy and Dr. George Freedman.

DTSC Symposia are ADA-CERP continuing education lectures that attendees can see first live and later on online. At the GNYDM, the DT Study Club offers a total of 24 CE hours. DTSCs Spanish-language portal at will soon offer a new series of lectures by Latin America experts.

Dr. George Freedman and Dr. Fay Goldstep; “The Power of Dentistry Positively and Significantly Affecting our Patients' Lives,” by Dr. Shamshudin Kherani, and “Understanding the Advances in Self-Adhesive Technology and How To Incorporate Them Into Your Restorative Practice,” by
Dr. Marty Jablow.

Advanced Implant Surface Layer
A large representation of Latin American dental leaders attended the meeting. Among them was Latin America Dental Federation president, Dr. Adolfo Rodríguez; Argentinean Dental Association president, Dr. Ricardo Martínez Lalis; Ecuadorean Dental Federation President, Dr. Gorki Espinosa, Mexican Dental Association President, Dr. Jaime Edelson, as well as well-known speakers such as José Luis Rafel (Dominican Rep), Jesús Ochoa (Perú), Carlos Alfonso (New York) or Vicente Ferrer (Spain).

Dr. Ferrer, a researcher and professor at the University of Murcia in Spain said that he and his team have developed a new surface layer for implants that speeds up considerably osseointegration.

“With this new layer surface we have been able to reduce necrotic areas around the implant a week after placement,” explained Ferrer. “We believe this layer eases implant placement. It’s a bioactive implant surface layer that promotes bone growth and stimulates osteoblasts to form bone from the first week. On the other hand, we know that this layer is totally reabsorbed, something which was confirmed through electronic microscopy.”

Dr. Ferrer, who presented a research poster and used Global Medical Implants (GMI) in his studies, says that no other implant system nowadays can show a growth-stimulating implant that is able to provoke osteogenesis in the tip of the implant.

Looking for US Distributors

The first studies were made in vitro, they have recently finished 8-week studies in rabbits, and next year they will start trials in humans.

Dr. Scott Ganz, a US expert in Prosthodontics, Maxillofacial Prosthetics, and Implant Dentistry and Director of the International College of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) who attended the presentation, seemed quite impressed with the results from the trials he was shown.
