Mexico City — The main event of Mexican dentistry, the AMIC Dental expo, was a resounding success on the first day of its 55 edition, judging by the considerable amount of people in attendance. Dental Tribune publishes at the expo several issues of the show daily AMIC Dental Today.
Renowned personalities attended the opening today, including most notably the Executive Director of FDI World Dental Federation (FDI), Jean-Luc Eiselé.
The director asked participants at AMIC to also attend the FDI World Dental Congress, which be held from September 14 to 17, 2011 in Mexico City, and will include hundreds of top level speakers. The attendance here at the 55th International AMIC Dental foreshadows that the FDI World Congress will be a greater success.
Eiselé briefly explained the pillars of FDI, saying the organization brings together more than 200 national dental associations from around the world, which represent 1.4 million dentists.
"The first goal of FDI is to keep an international network so that dental associations can work together on oral health programs," said Eiselé." The second is to find ways improve oral health worldwide. The third is to create educational courses and conferences, like the one that will be held in Mexico. And the fourth, in collaboration with the industry, is to translate advances in science into practical use to improve the oral health of the population."
The president of the Mexican Dental Association (ADM), Dr. Jaime Edelson, said the FDI Congress will be the most important event in the dental history of Mexico, which is why ADM and AMIC Dental have spared no effort to achieve a first-rate event world.
Dr. Edelson said that over 100 Mexican and international exhibitors will participate in the FDI congress. Admission to the commercial expo will be free, and ADM has developed a program to provide Mexican dental students with free admission to the congress clinical lectures.
UNAM Congress
The Dean of Dentistry of the National University of Mexico (UNAM), Ms. José Arturo Fernández Pedrero, officially opened the 55th AMIC expo. UNAM organizes the scientific congress on the upper floors of the Mexico City's World Trade Center, and estimates that 5,000 people will attend the scientific congress.
Fernández Pedrero said AMIC Dental has become one of the five largest dental events in the world. He reiterated the need for partnerships between academic institutions and the industry. "Only if we are united, will we be able to move forward," said the UNAM dean.
"We have a unique profession. In Mexico we have only 110,000 dentists for the over 117 million inhabitants we have in the country: the need (for professionals) is huge, but we must walk together, associations, institutions and businesses," he added.
The dean concluded by saying that a united front is a basic element to develop a different kind of dentistry. We have "over 117 dentistry schools in this country, 37 of which are certified: we want all 117 to be certified in order to provide the highest quality dental service to all Mexicans."
