Prof. Claudio Fernandes, Scientific Director of the FDI Annual World Dental Congress 2010 (AWDC), is a well-known researcher and professor of Prosthodontics. His down to earth, easy-going manner betrays his extensive knowledge and organization skills. In this talk, he highlights the Scientific Program and the advances achieved by Brazil, where there are now 150,000 practicing dentists, almost 200 dental schools, and a very strong dental industry.

What are the main features of the FDI Salvador Congress?
Speakers from all over the world will present courses and lectures about the most relevant clinical advances affecting dentists. The FDI Permanent Chapters will also offer workshops and forums on a large spectrum of topics open to anyone interested. Beyond our world class Scientific Program, hundreds of FDI members will meet at the World Dental Parliament to discuss global issues concerning the FDI and to establish strategic guidelines and policies for upcoming years.

The World Dental Fair will display new products, advanced equipment and technologies, and visitors will be able to experience what hundreds of exhibitors have to offer.

Why is it important to attend a FDI World Congress?
The AWDC is something unique. It is the only really global congress that gives participants a broad view of dentistry worldwide. It is not rare to find a solution to challenges back home over a cup of coffee during a break. The focus is the practicing clinician and all efforts are made to ensure professional growth and development at the meeting. The fusion of different cultures also provides a wonderful feeling for learning about other countries.

What are the main features of the scientific programme?
The scientific program of AWDC 2010 was developed to provide the dental professional a broad view of the advances in clinical dentistry worldwide. The main objective is to improve oral health conditions globally through scientifically sound strategies. New technologies such as CAD/CAM, new implant surface designs, and evolving dental adhesive formulations are changing the dental office. In the biotechnology front, stem cell, genetic dentistry, and salivary research will result in major scientific breakthroughs. The 2010 Scientific Program also aims to promote oral health around the world. Scientific activities are distributed around four main areas, and topics are intended to promote discussion on public policies and private practices, emerging trends, research, development of materials, and clinical techniques for all dental specialties. Furthermore, an important debate will discuss the impact of oral health on systemic health.

How many presenters are you featuring?

There will be 150 scientific lectures, symposiums, forums and pre-congress courses by 102 speakers. About half are international speakers and the other half from Latin American, many from Brazil. The Scientific program features 12 congresses in one, if you group topics by specialty. There will literally be something for everyone. Check the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTUv0J2Ohig) and see the whole FDI-AWDC scientific program and a lot of Salvador also.

Will "Disparities in Oral Health" be one of the main topics?
Inequalities and disparities in oral health are widespread and discussing them will make people conscious about the importance of promoting oral health worldwide. The forum “Oral Health For All – Inequalities, Local Challenges, Global Solutions” will discuss this with world leaders such as Saskia Estupiñán-Day, Denis Bourgeois, Celio Percinoto, Peter Cooney, Paulo Capel Narvai and Juan Carlos Llodra Calvo. The subject is so interesting that we will also feature the Forum of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR), that will deal with “Global Oral Health Inequalities: The Research Agenda Report from the IADR Workshop”. Several global leaders such as Maria Fidela Navarro, David Williams, Christopher Fox and Roberto Vianna will debate on the issue.

What about caries prevention?
The FDI Global Caries Initiative will provide an excellent opportunity for debate at the FDI Science Committee Forum. Also, global companies have chosen the area of preventive dentistry to build their corporate symposiums. GSK and Colgate will bring new knowledge on hypersensitivity and Cadbury/Kraft will discuss models for preventive dentistry and community partnership. Furthermore, global speakers such as Jaime Cury, Yvonne Buischi, Nigel Pits, and Claes Goran Emilsson will lecture on the topic with the most updated information on fluoride, caries assessment, minimally invasive dentistry and other relevant topics.
